It also improves the experience of existing employees by ensuring they have the proper information and resources as they transition to new roles. The longer the transition, the more costly the new hire will be to the organization ([@B2]). Proper onboarding is especially important when working with students, interns, and trainees; these workers, in general, have little to no formal training or experience, and successful completion of a task depends on the ability to make use of appropriate knowledge and skills acquired in the past ([@B4]). Trainee or student engagement, defined as the extent to which a trainee or student is intrinsically motivated and committed to the program, has been found to predict the duration and quality of an individual's engagement in the field ([@B3]). Trainees are also less likely to complete internships and fellowships as a result of the barriers that exist for them in completing the necessary training, or they may fail to attend formal classes or conferences at all ([@B5]). Although it is understood that effective onboarding is important to the success of any given program, the literature suggests that the need to fully onboard students and trainees can be overwhelming. This is likely due to the fact that onboarding can occur in several forms (e.g., orientation, orientation program, culture days, orientation process). These forms of onboarding can occur at multiple stages in the trainee's professional journey. For the student, the struggle to fully integrate can manifest as a lack of focus and learning. For the trainee, who is already dealing with the stress of transitioning to a new location, the additional burden of completing the aforementioned forms can be counterproductive. This occurs when new responsibilities are added to the to-do list at a time when students are already overwhelmed with limited time and resources to complete tasks, as well as the need to complete other personal responsibilities. The main objective of this research was to identify the success factors that make programs effective. This study was undertaken to provide suggestions to orientation leaders about how to onboard students and trainees in an effective and sustainable manner. Success factors were identified based on the combined experiences of the researchers' professional working relationships with organizations and on their own internal research of effective onboarding programs, including research involving the onboarding of interns. Perceived Success Factors {#S1} ========================= Training and education administrators have generally been hesitant to publicly acknowledge that they have faced challenges in onboarding new trainees, as it could potentially serve as a liability to their reputation.
